What is a Prior Authorization?
A prior authorization is an additional step that insurance companies sometimes require before agreeing to cover a medication.
Insurance companies may require prior authorization for any type of birth control, however, most frequently require them for more expensive forms of brith control like Lo Loestrin Fe, Xulane, NuvaRing or brand name pills.
The process requires the doctor to fill out paperwork demonstrating the patient has a medical need for the specific medication, and proof the patient has previously tried alternative medications.
It can take up to 7 business days to hear back from the insurance company, and there is no guarantee it will be approved.
If your insurance company requires a prior authorization, we can avoid the process by asking the doctor to rewrite your Rx for another type of birth control or updating your current Rx to allow for generic substitutions.
